Vinaigrettes Abstraites
(Abstract vinaigrettes)

Vinaigrettes abstraites tells the story of an impossible but nevertheless so desirable marriage: the oil and vinegar’s. The photos draw the scenes of this tumultuous relation in all its forms. As an eternal dance, these fluids mingle and repel each other, continually. The vinaigrette is an utopian alchemist quest, represented as a tribute to Abstraction. With the variety of oils and vinegars as a palette, Vinaigrettes abstraites takes inspiration in famous abstract works, to catch their primitive emotion: a shape, a color, a movement.

Amelie Lombard is a Paris-based photographer, specialized in food photography. For Amélie, Photography is first and foremost… a matter of taste.
Wherever she focuses her lens, she always looks for a subtle blend of flavors, the harmony of the textures and the nuance of the emotions. She works on a judicious combination of inspiration and technique, precision and improvisation, as a chef concocting recipes.
Her recipe? A good dose of elegance, a light pinch of daring, a zest of sensuality. Sift with imagination and curiosity and leave to simmer with patience and greed. A delight to look at!

Liquid Illusions

The images in this series show a selection of work produced by Ray Massey for international advertising agencies over recent years. They have all been produced in Ray’s studio – a deconsecrated Church Hall in London.

Ray’s practice focuses primarily on photographing liquids and drinks using his passion for solving problems, creating illusions and making effects special. Ray uses many in camera techniques to produce a number of the effects shown in these photographs, complemented by system composing and retouching.

Ray Massey:

I was first exposed to light in Somerset in the southwest of England. Thirteen years later I discovered photography whilst experimenting with a pinhole camera made from a coffee tin. To this day, I am still reminded of the magic of photography and my enchantment watching my first print develop before my eyes, each time I capture a fleeting reality.

Having studied photography and fine art at Somerset College of Art and a further three years at the Medway College of Art in Kent, I inevitably became an assistant in London. During a period of eighteen months, I assisted several inspiring photographers before realising I was unemployable and becoming freelance at the age of 20.

My earliest work consisted of editorial commissions working on location for magazines before life threw me into the studio as a commercial problem solving photographer. Today, the majority of my work arrives from international advertising agencies and is produced in my converted Church Hall in London's Camden Town. I have always enjoyed working with creatives from different cultures where I find insight into varied perspectives and approaches to producing an image. During the last eighteen month I have produced campaigns for clients in the USA, Germany, Dubai, Istanbul, Lagos, Greece, Dublin, Moscow and Sweden. Still life, action, liquids, drinks and physical artistry keep me busy most of the time.

To refresh, I try to set aside time to work on personal projects both in and out of the studio. Out of the studio, I have a passion for travel photography and recent travel projects include Himalayas, Vietnam, Madagascar, and a series of images to bring awareness to the “Kanyike” project in Uganda(www.kanyike-project.co.uk) set up to raise money for villages in this area to aid recovery from many years of civil war and ravages of the HIV epidemic. My most recent project has been T.E.A.B.A.G. (The education and book appeal for Ghana) in Mankoadze village in Ghana (www.teabagcharity.org.uk)

Food for thought

Navet :
The taste is build on the capacity to dissociate the original flavor: sweet, salty, bitter. As my mouth detects the different flavors my eyes disperses the textures in the light  and reconstruct an abstract image with it. The process of creation goes trough the spectator. Any of us will  have a different interpretation as a dream.
And it is only a radish!!!

RAISINS = grapes
What is very very small looks like the very very big! A grape in his juice looks like a planet in the cosmos! We, huma, must stay very humble in front of such amazing Nature because we are just a part of it.

Self-taught Mathilde de l'Ecotais started as a reporter for the Sygma and AFP news agencies. During this period, she photographed everything from gangs in Los Angeles to the daily life of the Papuan people of Indonesia, from Pierre Puget's architecture in Marseille to the Luxembourg Palace and its senators.

Her meeting with Alain Ducasse in 2001 proved to be a turning point in her career. Ever since, she has dedicated her efforts to celebrating the culinary artwork of top chefs, including Thierry Marx, with whom she has collaborated for the past four years.

Her work is a reactive reflection of the world around her. Her virtual cookbook reveals her innovative touch through her use of various media (film, video installation, culinary design, multi-sensory exhibits, etc.). Her photographs and films are products of the present, often featuring the Earth and its bounty as their central subject.

L'Ecotais has received many awards, among them best culinary photography for Le grand livre des desserts et pâtisseries d'Alain Ducasse, 2006, the METRO Cash & Carry Award, 2007, and the Festival International de la Photographie Culinaire’s design prize for Planet Marx and the Jury Grand Prize in 2009. The magazine Jalouse named her woman of the year in 2004.

Observations and Still Life with Food

The exhibition comprises of Jason’s food related images captured in his unique subtly observed way. His photography brings out beauty in these ordinary and somewhat banal subject matters. The Plastic Food series included in the exhibition was a project in which Jason recreated ordinary, unglamorous settings using the plastic food models found in restaurant menu displays all over Japan. The aim was for these models to give the images a slight oddness. Perhaps at first the viewer may not realise that the food is in fact fake but feel that there was something not quite right within the setting.

Hindley’s photographic career began as one half of the acclaimed still-life duo Giblin & James. In 2006, Hindley began to pursue his own personal style of photography, capturing enchanting images of the mundane and ordinary and focusing on the small oddities in everyday life that can so easily go unnoticed. In 2009, Hindley closed the chapter on Giblin & James, bringing together his location work with his award-winning studio still-life work. Hindley has been awarded numerous awards worldwide, including OneShow, D&AD, Cannes Lions, Campaign, CommArts, PDN, AOP and Golden Drum.

How Quickly Food Photos Age
35 Years of Food Photography"

Thirty-five examples from 35 years, all taken by first-class photographers and published in the leading german magazine Der Feinschmecker, document a delicious, occasionally funny slice of history, and invite you to enjoy a culinary visual journey. The production of food always reflects much of the spirit of the times as well as the attitude towards life that is particularly prevalent among the people in our culture. The pictures tell a story about how the aesthetics of food have changed over the past three decades and how the subject has gained in importance.

Chinese Temple Cuisine

Westermann’s work has long been a bright spot in the confusion of an overly stimulated media world. The achievement, of course, is a challenge he savors. Amid the tropical Asian climate, carrying 40 kilos of equipment, he functioned as photographer, stylist, food stylist and assistant, all in one. Embracing the asceticism of China’s Buddhist temples–a realm into which food photography had not yet ventured–he brought forth images of great meditative simplicity, bespeaking his own reverence for authentic locations, the centuries-old culinary tradition, and its character and products. Thus the compositions and their subjects were united in a new vocabulary of artistic expression.

Jan-Peter Westermann, born in 1959, began his professional career in the mid-80s as a studio photographer, specializing in food, in Hamburg. Today he is one of the most sought-after photographers in his profession. In 2002 he teamed up with his partner, Nikolai Buroh, to found Westermann Studios so they could carry out even larger projects.

"Natures Mortes de Fruits et Légumes"

I have spent several years photographing fruit and vegetables at my home in the south of France. On Saturday mornings we would go to the local market at Uzès, where the region's farmers offered their wares. We would buy the best specimens the season had to offer and then we’d get to work back at the house. The still lifes were all shot in daylight in 4” x 5” format. The prints were developed at the legendary Fresson studio in Savigny-sur-Orge, near Paris, using the carbon print process, which was developed in 1899 by the great-great-grandfather of the current generation of Fressons.

Biography Peter Knaup:

After completing his Business Administration studies at the University of Mannheim in 1972, Peter Knaup began his autodidactic career as a photographer. He started in Barcelona, where he spent six months photographing the Catalonian architecture of Antoni Gaudi.

He moved to Paris in 1982 where he quickly became a successful photographer working for magazines such as Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle and Décoration Internationale. He was also hired by the most prominent publicity agencies and worked for many years as the photographer for the culinary section of Marie Claire.

Awards:
In addition to the many awards obtained for his work in Germany and France, he received the Gold Medal of the Art Directors Club of New York 1988, in the category of Photography. In 2006, Peter Knaup received a coveted invitation of the Museum of Decorative Arts of the Louvre to participate in the exhibition “La Photografie Publicitaire en France.”
